Segundo ‘Boy’ Ecury

Segundo Jorge Adelberto Ecury (“Boy”) was born on April 22, 1922, in Oranjestad, Aruba. In 1937, he moved to the Netherlands to continue his studies. During World War II, Ecury could not remain indifferent to the injustices he witnessed and joined the underground resistance movement to channel his frustration into action.

On November 5, 1944, after being betrayed, he was arrested after attending a church service. The very next day, November 6, he was executed in The Hague (Waalsdorpervlakte) at just 22 years old. His sacrifice did not go unnoticed. On April 28, 1947, his remains were returned to Aruba, where he was reburied with full military honors. Decades later, in 1984, the Dutch government posthumously awarded him the ‘Resistance Memorial Cross’ in recognition of his courage.

Ecury is remembered not only for his bravery but also for his integrity, captured in his notable words: “In my father’s house there is no place for traitors.”
